If your kitchen feels cramped there are many ways to enhance the space you have. Simple, small changes can make a huge difference. Your kitchen is a room you spend a lot of time in so it’s important you truly enjoy the space.

With some careful planning and clever tricks, a small kitchen can appear open and spacious. Here are a few tips to help you make your kitchen seem bigger:

-Light and Consistent Colours

Dark colours make a room seem smaller so it is important to keep your kitchen colour scheme light and bright. This will increase the amount of light being reflected onto the kitchen, which makes the room appear bigger. Obviously, bright white or cream are perfect for this but don’t feel limited. Light greens, blues and even greys can work well too. Whatever colour you choose, try to make the cabinet doors and walls one consistent colour. This removes any visual barriers that cause the eye to stop short, thus making the room appear much larger than it actually is.

-Plan your Storage options carefully

The first rule of making a small kitchen look bigger is to ‘keep it minimalist.’ Avoiding clutter and utilising clever storage options is key to enhancing your kitchen space. Drawers and a narrow larder can help to maximise the amount of storage space available, which allows you to hide away ingredients, utensils and crockery, keeping worktops and shelving clean and clear. Leave only statement pieces out in the open, such as colourful kettles and toasters, flowers and other decorative items. Open wall storage is also a good way of opening up a small space. As every inch counts, open storage options, such as shelves or hanging rails, are brilliant as they don’t have cupboard doors which block off space. It is essential to achieve a balance between open and closed storage options throughout your kitchen. This is why planning is key.

-Lighting

Realistically, a huge light fitting is not going to work in a small kitchen. You have to be clever and plan your lighting correctly. It is important not to clutter your kitchen with unnecessary lighting as well. Good lighting from the ceiling and underneath cupboards can make a huge difference. Integrated lighting can be a design-saver when it comes to small kitchens. These lights barely feature in the overall room design, but can be used to flood the room with bright light, which makes the kitchen feel airier at any time of day.

-Go Handle-less

Handleless kitchen cabinets make your kitchen look clean, uncluttered and streamlined. They will offer fluid movement throughout the whole kitchen. Handleless cabinets are modern and simplistic which compliments modern appliances, such as a Sage Coffee Machine. They are also a safer option than standard kitchen handles as they remove anything you can bump into or catch on when cooking or entertaining.

-Glossy/Reflective Surfaces

Gloss finish cabinets and worktops, as well as stainless steel accents across taps, handles and appliances will reflect the light and make the room feel much larger than it actually is. Make the most of your natural light by keeping your window design very simple with little to no treatments on the glass, or ornaments on windowsills. Again, it is very important to plan where you are going to integrate glossy surfaces, as too much can be overwhelming. Balance is the most important aspect of the design process.
