The Kitchen Design Process
Effective kitchen design is the process of combining layout, surfaces, appliances and design details to form a cooking space that’s easy to use and fun to cook and socialise in. The world of effective design is a maze of design ideas, guides and tips – and a seemingly endless stream of expert advice. Here at Torbitts Ltd, our experienced designers will help you through every step of the design process. We have created kitchens for a wide range of different houses across Northern Ireland.
How are you going to use your Kitchen
The first place to start is thinking about how you’re going to use your kitchen. It is important to think about what appliances and fixtures you would need most. What other activities will happen in your kitchen apart from those related to food? How about a sitting area with a TV or games console? Office type activities such as computer time and paying the bills are also popular in kitchen spaces. It is important to consider all these possibilities. Before making any confirmed decision, it is important to think about how your kitchen will relate to the spaces surrounding it.
Create a Floor Plan
A good layout will allow you to move easily between the three while cooking. It should also provide enough space so that if you are cooking alongside someone else, you won’t constantly be knocking into each other. A good kitchen floor plan has 3 key zones- a primary zone for preparing food, a secondary zone for cooking and baking and a third zone for circulation through the kitchen. At Torbitts Ltd, our designers always consider there is enough space within your kitchen to carry out specific activities. We also take into consideration traffic flow and areas where space could be cramped.
Make your Kitchen Multifunctional
Over recent years, kitchens have become more versatile, suitable for entertaining and relaxing as well as cooking. Our designers will always keep this in mind and look to create a kitchen design that is open and inviting, and that can facilitate entertaining and cooking simultaneously. One of our favourite design tips is to include a kitchen island with seating. This provides an inviting area where guests and family members can relax and socialise without encumbering the use of the work triangle. The host can then cook and entertain without being excluded.
Consider your Cupboards
Most people don’t pay enough attention to how they allocate or use cupboard space, but this is one of the key details that give a kitchen design that professional touch. Your cupboard layout should be organised according to how you use the space. Situate items that you commonly use together near each other. Locate frequently used items where they are easily reachable, so you don’t need to stoop down. Even simple touches such as elevating and organising your spice collection so that it’s easy to see can improve your experience of using your kitchen. Especially, when designing for smaller, city properties in Belfast, it is even more important to consider your cupboard space.
