What Not To Do When Designing Your Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where a family congregates, cooks and catches up. So it’s important for us at Torbitts to get it just right. Over the years, we have perfected our practice and come up with a few tips for what NOT to do when designing your kitchen.

Do not… forget that you need counter space

This may seem silly or really fundamental but a common mistake that’s made when designing a kitchen is not leaving enough counter space to work with. ‘Remember to include enough space to prepare meals, display all your appliances, wash up, eat and socialise if that is how you plan on using the kitchen, ‘ advises Hayley Simmons, Head of Merchandising for Magnet

Never… underestimate how much storage you need

Make a list of every pot, pan, plate, knife, fork, spoon and cup you own. Now allocate a space for it. The key to successful storage is integrating smart solutions throughout.

Be creative. Consider pull-out storage. Think about a trolley as a home for different utensils. They save space and are easily accessible.

Do not…forget about lighting

Strike a balance between functionality and aesthetic. When preparing food, you need direct and bright light. Spotlights concealed under wall cabinets and in the ceiling are still the most popular, practical choice to use throughout. When eating food, bright lighting isn’t as much of a priority. In communal spaces, consider lamps and living room style lighting. This will create ambience.

Don’t… go over your budget

Easier said than done, we know! But we are fully aware of how dramatically a project spend can increase. So set a number, and commit to not going over. Don’t buy things you don’t need, stick to practicality and functionality.

Avoid… picking designs that will date

Kitchens aren’t cheap to replace, so don’t choose something that will date in a few years. If you’re unsure, stick to a timeless, classic style. We can help you with advice on that.

Do not… rule out knocking walls through

If you have a rarely used dining room, or a smaller living area next to your kitchen, why not transform this area by knocking the wall through and creating a stunning open plan space that will be put to better use. Get professional advice from us before you do this.

Arguably, the kitchen is the most important room in the house. You want it to reflect your personality, strike a happy balance between aesthetics and functionality, make best use of the space and not date. A lot to think about isn’t it? That’s why we’ve provided you with a list of what not to do when designing your kitchen. We hope it’s helpful.
